‘Olive all’ascolana’—with their soft and savory meat stuffing surrounded by a crisp, breaded crust—are a specialty of Ascoli Piceno, the city where I was born in the region of Le Marche, Italy, but they are well renown all around the country and beyond. I like them because they remind me of my childhood, when all the women of my family reunited for producing hundreds of stuffed olives once in a while: they’re a symbol of ingenuity, tradition, purpose-made, women’s complicity.
